Movies, life, feminism, and more Crafts

One of my friends is feeling very anti-consumerism this year, so I'm making her a gift out of "garbage". I forget where I first saw the idea, but I remember seeing a site that told you how to make "yarn" out of plastic grocery bags. I'm crocheting her a bag out of bags. I'm also trying to finish a scarf that's not working so well, and a lot of dish cloths which are working.

Went to see Beowulf this week, in IMAX 3D. I would like to state my undying love for anything Neil Gaimen touches. I love that man, and want to steal his brain. I'm giving my Dad one of his books for his birthday, which I have to mail out very soon.

I'm a little pissed of at myself. Yesterday was the aniversary of the Montrel Massacre, and the National Day of Rememberence and Action for Violence Against Women. I did nothing. This was the first time in 4 years I wasn't part of or at least at a service or discussion. I need to reconnect with my inner feminist. I need to do something, but living in a new town and not knowing anyone or any organizations is hard. I'm not good at meeting people or getting out into the community.

Anyone know any feminist organizations in North-Central Nova Scotia?

Christmas on the brain

For the holiday season, I've (Hootin' Anni's) started a meme. "The Twelve Questions of Christmas"

1. Christmas is _Love_. [fill in the blank with ONE WORD]

2. In memories, what was the best part of your Christmases past?
Baking with Mom, visiting my grandparents, waking up at 5am to open stockings

3. Was Santa ever good to you? [describe how and what]
Santa's always good to me, because I've never been on the naughty list. Last year I got a (very used) car, this year I got a dishwasher (my in-laws dropped it off on Sunday) I get spoiled by my MIL and Mom.

4. Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or both?
One on Christmas Eve, the rest Christmas Day.

5. Is there something you make each and every year? [craft or recipe]
Shortbread cookies with Mom

6. What is your favorite five[5] Christmas songs/hymns?
Hark the Herald
Jingle Bells
All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth
Adam Sandler's Hanukah songs
Little Drummer Boy (David Bowie/Bing Crosby version)

7. Is there a new tradition for Christmas since your childhood days?
I play stockticker with the in-laws, it's new to me but they've done it for years

8. Describe one of your Christmas trips. [whether it's across town or across country]
Driving through snow, about an hour and a half to visit the grandparents.

9. Do you have a special Christmas outfit to wear for the day?
Do PJs and a Santa hat count?

10. Have YOU or any of your family members sat on Santa's lap?
A long, long time ago, when I was a wee one I would always sit in Santa's lap, but that hasn't happened in about 20 years.

11. What is/or will be on your Christmas tree this year?
NA we don't do a tree, the cats would eat it and we're never home for Christmas.

12. Do you/or have you decorated your yard for Christmas?
I live in an apartment building. No yard to decorate, but some of the neighbors have gone all out.

Merry Christmas!

Crafts!

I finished a chicken last night. She's all fluffy and cute. I made her without a pattern. I wanted to see if I could make a toy without one, and I did! She only cost $2 to make. I bought the yarn at the dollar store, and stuffed her with a shreded plastic bag. She's sitting on my desk right now, chilling with Siggy and Miss Muffet's Spider.

I hate using patterns. I have a huge problem with being told what to do, unless it's at work or it's something where I know I need direction. I can handle being given tasks and asked to do things, but when I'm trying to be creative I like to rely on myself more than a pattern. A lot of the crochet I make is intuitive. Sure, her wings are a little lop-sided, but I think that adds to the charm. When there are minor errors like that you know that it was handmade. That, and patterns frustrate the Hell out of me.

Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with her. I've scrapped the elephant for now, because I've got to get some dish clothes made for Christmas. I'm going to be giving those to relatives. I've got 2 and a half pot holders made. I think I'll finish the second and make some pink dish cloths to go with it.

Yay Technorati!

So, I'm going to submit this the Technorati to see if anyone visits. I doubt they will, but just in case I'm looking for ideas for a purpose of this blog. Should it be a random collection of things I scrape off other sites? Should it be the story of my adventures in Crafting? A reflection on being married, 23 and childless? Philosophical musings (I've got to put that BA(Phil) to use sometime)?

Purpose

This blog needs a purpose. I can't let it become just another place where I put stuff with no connection what so ever. That's ok on occasion but there needs to be some greater theme for everything to follow. Should I write about my thoughts and ideas? Should I focus on politics and feminism? Should I write about crafts? I'm confused. I'm going to have to mull this over for a few days.

Handywoman

Husband and I are starting to think about buying a house. It's going to take a while before we're ready to do that, have to get the credit back on track and all that fun stuff. Even when we're ready to buy a house, I'm pretty sure our price range will be on the low side. We're probably going to get a "fixer-upper".

I was looking for some DIY advice and instruction sites, and I found this Top 10 DIY Sites

Looking around the sites on there started to get me thinking about what I could do with a house of my own. I could decorate, re-build, wall paper or just about anything. We have some experience painting and ripping up carpet and putting down laminate floors. I could do so much more in my own home.

I'm looking forward to that day.

Collected Laws

CONWAY'S LAW

In any organization there will always be one person who knows what is going on. This person must be fired

DEMIAN'S OBSERVATION

There is always one item on the screen menu that is mislabeled and should read "ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE".

GREEN'S LAW OF DEBATE

Anything is possible if you don't know what you're talking about.

HELLER'S LAW

The first myth of management is that it exists.

JENKINSON'S LAW

It won't work.

LIEBERMAN'S LAW

Everybody lies; but it doesn't matter since nobody listens.

MESKIMEN'S LAW

There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.

WHITEHEAD'S LAW

The obvious answer is always overlooked.

I'm a monkey with too much time on my hands

This weekend I was thinking about how strange life is. I spend most of my time trying to get work done and waiting for the next distraction. I sit at home, working on crafts, writing or hitting the Stumble button. I haven't done anything meaningful or real in almost a year except the wedding.

I'm a little home sick. I don't miss the place, but the people. Most of my friends are there. My husband has noticed how bored and lonely I've been lately. I've never really missed anyone like this before. I'm not miserable by a long shot, but there are things I really miss about home.

Husband got guitar hero 3 this weekend. I don't like it. It hurts to watch and I don't like all the half -naked women.

Be Greatful I'm suffering writer's block...

I was going to write a haiku today, but my brains are leaking out my ear. It's Friday. I have to go get stuff to make Christmas presents.

I'm trying to make:
A crochet rag-rug
crochet pot-holders
a paper-mache pencil holder
polymer clay tree ornaments
a felt ninja doll
some crochet stuffed toys
and maybe some cross-stitch stuff

Think I can get that all done before Christmas?

Hmmm... makes me think

Think Before You Blog

Word Monkey

Words I use frequently in conversation that many people don't understand:

interweb - this one confuses my mother, to her it's either the Web or the Internet.

thingy - this is a word a lot of people use when they cannot find the exact term they need in their repository of words.

Confusselled - I get so confused that I've confused the word "confused."

Blah - describes a feeling of boredom, melancholy, and a little bit of frustration usually associated with a significant other, or a social activity.

Wonky - I read too much Harry Potter.

Wheeeeee! I'm a monkey. I live in the jungle and swing from trees. I'm not a huge fan of bananas, I prefer banana flavored soy-protein bars.

I like socks.
